Celebration of International Human Rights Day, 10 December 2015 Winter Tranzit Center Slavonski Brod

Although human rights are guaranteed,  inalienable, and regulated with  many international documents, the fight against discrimination  remains  daily fight for millions of people  around the world.

In order to stress out to the public the importance of human rights protectin, Information Legal Centre (ILC), in co-operation with the Croatian Law Centre (CLC) and Centre for Peace Studies (CPS), organised celebration of International Human Rights Day in the Winter Transit Centre Slavonski Brod on 10 December 2015.

International Human Rights Day has been celebrated since 1948, when Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed, and when, for the first time in history, the right of all humans to freedom, justice and peace was recognised without distincion.

ILC executive director Natasa Kovacevic welcomed numerous representatives from national and international organisations present at the event which was organised in the Red Cross tent within the Winter Tranzit Centre. CPS employee Sara Kekus, President of CLC Agata Racan and UNHCR representative Jasna Barberic also greeted everybody present at the event and stressed the significance of respect for human rights in their address. In the end, Vice president of the Government of Republic of Croatia and Minister of Interior Ranko Ostojic congratulated Human Rights Day to all the present referring to the refugee messaged that were set up within the exhibition.

The central part of the celebration was appearance of “Ad astra”, vocal group from Slavonski Brod, who sang a cappella five songs from their rich repertoire.

As part of the program, ILC prepared exhibition of photographs which were taken during ILC’s project “Photovoice”. Local Roma population used Photovoice technique in order to present their everyday life and hardship to the public through modern media (photographs, internet, social networks).  Additionally, the messages of refugees in transit through Slavonski Brod about their comprehension of human rights were also exposed.Lastly, ILC organized refreshment for all representatives and volunteers of local and international organizations that attended the ceremony.
