A round table “Prevention of addiction among young Roma”, 24 November 2015

On 24 November 2015 Information Legal Centre organised a round table “Prevention of addiction among young Roma” in the municipal library.

The participants of the round table were representatives of local institutions and NGO’s working with the members of Roma minority. 

During the round table participants highlighted the problems faced by Roma in their daily lives. Low economic status and difficult living conditions are the most common reasons why young Roma are  using alcohol and drugs. In addition, due to the lack of social facilities within the Roma settlement, young children are often gathering on the road where they are in contact with various vices. The participants stressed the problem of  increased various forms of addiction for the last 10 years and they stressed the need of direct work with users in the settlement. 

All present agreed on the need for more frequent meetings of all stakeholders who are working with the Roma community in order to work more efficiently and they have additionally agreed that the recommendations from the round table will be implemented in the future.

The round table was attended by 16 participants and representatives of the local media. It  was held within the projects financed by the Ministry of Justice and UNHCR.
